Dr. DÁniel Koczka
Specialist in hand surgery. Precise work, human approach.
During my career I have treated thousands of patients - from the most common wrist and hand complaints to complex accidental injuries. I believe that good hand surgery is as much about professional precision as it is about understanding the patient.
About
My career - in brief.
I am Dr. Dániel Koczka, an orthopaedic traumatologist and certified hand surgery specialist. I graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Semmelweis University in 2015 and began my career in the field of traumatology and orthopaedics. I passed my specialist examination in orthopaedics and traumatology in 2021 and in hand surgery in 2024. I currently work as an assistant professor at the Department of Traumatology, Semmelweis University, and I am also pursuing a PhD in hand surgery.
My professional interests focus on restoring hand function. I specialise in chronic hand conditions, nerve compression syndromes, the consequences of tendon and nerve injuries, and post-traumatic pain, stiffness, limited mobility or deformity. My main areas of expertise include the diagnosis and treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, trigger finger, Dupuytren’s disease, De Quervain’s syndrome, thumb basal joint arthritis, sequelae of previous fractures, and peripheral nerve injuries.
It is important to me that patients not only receive a diagnosis, but also understand exactly what is causing their symptoms, what treatment options are available, and what benefits, risks and rehabilitation time they can expect. In each case, I tailor the treatment plan to the individual patient, taking into account the severity of the symptoms, age, occupation, activity level, expectations, and the role of the hand in everyday life.
International training programmes and fellowships have also contributed to my professional development. I gained further experience in Madrid and Santander, Spain, through the FESSH Travelling Award, and in Leeds, United Kingdom, through the AO Trauma Fellowship. These professional experiences reinforced my view that, in hand surgery, accurate diagnosis, carefully selected surgical technique and early, targeted rehabilitation together form the basis of good functional outcomes.
In addition to patient care, I am also involved in teaching and organisational work at Semmelweis University. As an assistant professor, I take part in the education of medical students, residents and specialist candidates, as well as in the coordination of clinical teaching. I believe that modern patient care is based on continuous learning, clear communication and an approach in which the aim is not only to reduce symptoms, but also to restore the usability, strength and safe function of the hand.
A patient’s hands always tell a story – and a good diagnosis comes from listening to them.
